TY Students Explore German History and Culture in Berlin

On Monday, December 2nd, a group of Transition Year students embarked on an unforgettable journey to Berlin as part of an exciting exchange program. Upon arrival at the Französisches Gymnasium, they were warmly welcomed by their exchange partners and their families, marking the beginning of their immersion into German culture and daily life.

The week commenced with a group meetup at the iconic Brandenburg Gate, where students captured some memorable photos before heading to the Technik Museum for an engaging and educational tour. This visit offered fascinating insights into technological advancements and historical innovations.

On Wednesday, the group visited the Holocaust Museum, a deeply moving and thought-provoking experience. This was followed by a walking tour through central Berlin, where students explored significant historical landmarks, including remnants of the Berlin Wall and the historic Checkpoint Charlie.

Thursday and Friday were dedicated to visiting two important sites of remembrance: Ravensbrück Concentration Camp and Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. These visits provided an opportunity for reflection and a deeper understanding of the events of World War II, leaving a profound impact on all who attended.

After a packed week of learning, exploration, and cultural exchange, the students returned home on Saturday, filled with new knowledge, friendships, and memories. The trip was a fantastic success.

Berlin Exchange in Kinsale – A Week of Adventure and Friendship

After an exciting visit to Berlin, we were delighted to welcome our German exchange students to Kinsale on January 13th. The reunion was filled with excitement as we kicked off a week of activities showcasing the best of what our region has to offer.

Our first big trip was to Killarney, where we explored the stunning scenery and enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the town. The students had the chance to experience the beauty of Ireland’s landscapes, from the lakes to the mountains, making it a memorable excursion.

We also enjoyed some friendly competition at bowling in Cork, where strikes and spares brought plenty of laughs. Following that, we headed to Mahon Point Shopping Centre, giving our exchange students the opportunity to pick up souvenirs and experience a bit of Irish shopping culture.

A highlight of the trip was our visit to Cobh, a town rich in history and charm. We explored its picturesque streets and learned about its deep connection to Irish emigration and the Titanic. The German students were particularly fascinated by the town’s maritime heritage and its breathtaking views over the harbour.

Beyond the scheduled outings, our exchange students also got to experience everyday life in Ireland—attending classes, spending time with their host families, and immersing themselves in Irish culture. The week was a perfect blend of adventure, learning, and friendship, making it a truly unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

As we said our goodbyes, there was a strong sense that this exchange had built lasting friendships and unforgettable memories. We look forward to keeping in touch with our German friends and perhaps visiting Berlin again in the future!
