Physical Education

We aim to provide a Physical Education Syllabus for our students that will prepare them for a life of autonomous well-being. To enable this to occur we ensure that we are aware of the pupils’ physical education and sporting experiences upon entering our school. We feel the Junior and Senior Cycle Physical Education Programmes which we have devised will challenge the pupils to participate in a relevant and coherent course of physical activities. We aim to provide our students with the opportunity to experience life skills such as: respect, effort, self-direction, helping others, leadership and applying learning beyond the PE class.

Students have a double period (80 mins) of PE every week from 1st to 6th year. Students are offered a vibrant and broad PE Programme and participate in activities such as Adventure Activities, Athletics, Gymnastics, Dance, Basketball, Badminton, Soccer, Unihoc, Yoga,Rugby etc…. There is a GAA Coaching Module undertaken with Transition Year students. Students are also provided with a module in Transition Year on Self Defence. A trip to Cappanalea O. E. C. occurs over a weekend in Second Year.

As part of the new Junior Cycle, students will be experiencing a new area of learning called Wellbeing. All the day-to-day interactions that take place in school can impact on students’ wellbeing. We, as a Physical Education department, can and must play a part in supporting wellbeing to all students.

Our Senior Cycle programme covers a wide range of areas in Physical Education as set out by the new Leaving Certificate P.E. syllabus. Students learn and participate in areas of P.E such as Health Related Activities, Sports Education, Contemporary Issues in Sports, Adventure Education and Games for Understanding.

We aim to:

·       enable all students to fulfil their intellectual, moral, spiritual, social, cultural and physical potential.

·       encourage students to foster the development of personal responsibility.

·       encourage a spirit of co-operation and mutual respect among students, staff, management, parents, and the wider community

·      develop the understanding of Health-Related Physical Activity and related concepts. We also aim to build students’ appreciation of the importance of lifelong physical activity & commitment to it.

·      provide students with an authentic experience of sport through the roles of: participant/player, referee, coach, choreographer and statistician.

·      develop learners as informed and critical participants in physical activities and sport.

·      provide a student – centred approach where the teacher acts as a facilitator and the students make their own adaptations in order to maximise the level of challenge and fun.

·      provide our students with the opportunity to improve their social interaction with their peers
